Clinical/Medical Massage

Clinical massage is sometimes referred to as orthopedic massage and it is the application of various soft tissue and manual therapy techniques designed to evaluate and treat soft tissue injuries.  This may include massage therapy, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, deep tissue, and other modalities.

Clinical tissue therapy can be effective in treating conditions such as low back pain, whiplash, myofascial pain, sprains, strains, sciatica, post injury or surgical rehabiliation, tendonitis and other tendon injuries, painful trigger points, repetitive strain injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches and edema and other ailments.

The main goal of clinical massage is to decrease pain, improve range of motion and restore normal function to the soft tissues of the body.

Medical massage is when a massage therapist performs clinical massage based on a physician's precription and performed with a specific goal for functional outcome.  It is generally a prescription as a series of visits over a specified period of time such as twice a week for six weeks with work only in the diagnosed area.  This can be paid by an insurance company.

The prices stated in our Wellness Massage Menu and Packages section reflect discounts for payment at time of service for clients and is for non-medical nor physician-referred massages.  Medical massage under insurance is billed at the Usual and Customary Rate (UCR) for the Portland Metropolitan area covering the treatment on credit, requiring hours of administrative billing time, tracking and collecting payment for services and requires well documented records and chart notes for billing purposes which is normally not required.
